State income tax is a tax controlled by individual states throughout the United States that is levied against your income.

Seven states impose no income tax

These states are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Additionally, New Hampshire and Tennessee limit their state income taxes to only dividends and interest income.

States like Tennessee raise tax revenue through alternative taxation methods such as higher sales taxes on the purchases of goods and services. As of May-2009, both Hawaii and Oregon have the highest rates of state income tax, with a maximum rate of 11%. Of those states which do impose an income tax, the lowest maximum rate is that of Illinois, which levies a flat tax of 3%. Most states (34) have a progressive income tax, where the rates rise as the income grows higher.

U.S. States without a personal income tax include:
Alaska – Florida – Nevada – New Hampshire – South Dakota – Tennessee – Texas – Washington and Wyoming have no personal income taxes.

All 50 states may use similar methods to fund their budgets -- taxes on income, sales, property, fuel, alcohol, tobacco -- but each state does so with its own formula of taxes. Many have turned to gambling as a way to fund the financial needs of their states.
